canine friendly home decorating

Do you have to choose between having a nice, clean home and having dogs? Is there a way to finish your home in a way that is canine friendly and still beautiful? I have struggled with this for years, but was not about to give up my dogs to have a home that I was proud to invite guests to and happy to live in. The purpose of my blog is to help other dog lovers find solutions for their home decorating and finishing problems. Here, you will find ideas of materials that can hold up very well to dogs in the house and tips for helping your dogs behave a little better in your beautiful home.

3 Interior Design Mistakes You Need To Avoid

When it comes to decorating your home, you may think that anything goes. However, there are certain things you need to steer clear of if you want your home to look fabulous inside. Here are three interior design mistakes you need to avoid.

1. Going overboard with a particular theme.

Selecting a theme for certain rooms in your home can be a fun idea. However, you need to make sure not to go overboard with a theme. Doing so can cause the particular room to look way too busy and uninviting.

Instead of going overboard with a theme, you can add select accent pieces to the room. For instance, if you love the Eiffel Tower and want to decorate your living room with that theme, select one piece of wall art featuring the tower to be the focal point of the room. Then, you can add two or three smaller accent pieces, such as Eiffel Tower bookends on the fireplace hearth, to complete the theme for the room.

2. Having furniture that is too big for the room.

It is easy to fall in love with furniture when it is on the showroom floor. However, you need to take into account that the showroom is likely much larger than the room the furniture will occupy in your home. Nothing detracts from the beauty of a room more than to have furniture that is way too big and doesn't leave a lot of room to move around the room.

It is a good idea to measure the space you have available for your new furniture and take those measurements to the furniture store with you. The sales person can help you find furniture that is the right size for your particular needs.

3. Using several different patterns in one room.

Another thing that can cause a room to look to busy and unpleasing to the eye is mixing up several different patterns in the same room. You may like stripes and floral patterns, but it is best not to mix the two when decorating a single room.

Instead, you need to select one pattern to dominate the room. Then, the rest of the decor and accents need to be a solid color that matches the color(s) in the pattern. This way, you are still using a pattern you love, but you aren't overloading the eyes with a bunch of different things to focus on.

A good way to ensure that you don't make any interior design mistakes is to hire a professional to come in and do the job for you. An interior designer with experience can get your home looking great in no time.
